Landscape Photography Holidays & Experiences
Develop your skills in the stunningly beautiful, wild and untamed wilderness of the North West Highlands of Scotland.
*AVAILABLE FROM NOVEMBER THROUGH FEBRUARY ONLY (when the light is best)*
The outstandingly beautiful wilderness around Ullapool makes for the ideal environment to develop your landscape photographic skills, whether you're just beginning or more experienced.
Mountains, lochs, beaches, islands, rivers & waterfalls are all within easy reach of the village - Inverpollaidh is only 20 minutes drive and Assynt 30 mins, and the beautiful beaches of Achnahaird & Achmelvich 45 minutes. Even the far north coast is just 90 minutes.
Available during the winter months (November through February), when the light is at its best, I offer both single day Highland Landscape Photography experiences and week-long holidays based in Ullapool (at my self-catering cottage if available, or my B&B).
Where I take you and what we attempt to achieve will be tailored to your own (or your group's) level of fitness and photographic experience. Whether you fancy a long walk in the hills or to a distant beach, or a vehicle tour of several easy-access locations, I am able to offer either or both, and anything in between.
I have deliberately chosen to specialise in the landscape local to Ullapool - I know when and where to go, depending on weather conditions.
SINGLE DAY EXPERIENCES
Available November through February each year and are charged at £225 (one photographer), £295 (two or three photographers) : approx 8 hours, inclusive of travelling time from Ullapool and short break for lunch (please bring your own packed lunch)
If you wish to book a Single Day experience, please contact me with your proposed date(s) and we'll take it from there. By making a booking, you are deemed to have read and accepted my Terms & Conditions at the end of this page.
VEHICLE-BASED TOURS (roadside or short, easy walking distance, with a variety of locations)

INVESTIGATING INVERPOLLAIDH : Loch Lurgainn, Stac Pollaidh, Achnahaird beach, Altandhu hill
MAGICAL MELLON : The Fain / An Teallach - Mellon Udrigle beach
ENERGETIC EXCURSIONS (Hill-walking or walk to remote location, with photography along the way - good levels of fitness required - a great way to immerse yourself in the Highlands)
HILL WALK : STAC POLLAIDH / CUL MOR / THE FIDDLER / QUINAG: great views of Inverpollaidh, Assynt & Coigach, with the satisfaction of a summit scaled.
WILDERNESS WALK : no mountain climbing, but a long walk into the wilderness, eg SHENAVALL BOTHY, KIRKAIG FALLS & FIONN LOCH.
SANDWOOD : Britain's most beautiful beach, on the far NW coast - sea cliffs, a sea stack, white sands & dunes. Perfection for the landscape photographer. 4.5 mile walk from the car park.
...AND ANYTHING IN BETWEEN TOO!
Available November through February only. The holidays that I offer are specifically tailored to your own (or your group's) physical and photographic abilities. They are based around a week's stay at Waterfront Cottage, my detached self-catering cottage just a mile from Ullapool centre. The cottage has three bedrooms (one double, two twin), and all have private en-suite facilities. Alternatively, if you would prefer B&B, why not stay at my B&B House On The Point, in Ullapool.
The cost of the holiday is a combination of your chosen accommodation and the number of days landscape photography that you'd like to book.
Waterfront Cottage rental is specified in the Availability column (shown on every page of the cottage website) - eg the basic winter rent is £475 per week + fuel charge. When combined with a stay at my cottage, photography sessions during the week are charged at a discounted rate of £195 per 8 hour day (one photographer) or £265 (two or three photographers). If you opt for different accommodation, the standard photography day rate applies (£225 / £295)
It is not necessary to book specific days during the week - we'll decide on this together when you arrive, with an eye on the weather forecast.
At your choice, photography days may be entirely on location, or mixed in with some digital darkroom tuition (Adobe Photoshop or Elements).
This is unlike most other Photography Holidays on the market in that it involves self-catering, incorporating as much (or as little) photography as you wish. Even for one person it works out as no more expensive than many alternatives and for a group it's a significantly cheaper. Ullapool has a full range of facilities, so there's no reason to do any more "self-catering" than you wish.
The ADVANTAGES over the standard full-board photography holidays include :
- very small group size
- comfort & privacy : Waterfront Cottage offers "home from home" comfort & facilities, including separate en-suite bedrooms, central heating, open fire, freesat TV, DVDs, broadband etc. And there's loads of room for three.
- flexibility : you choose the dates for your holiday and we cherry-pick the best looking days for location photography, and you choose when, where and what you eat (Ullapool has many excellent Pub/restaurants, award-winning Chippies and a couple of supermarkets)
WB & CS, Utah, USA (Week stay at Waterfront Cottage, with 3 photography days) : "In addition to the great photographic opportunities that you provided, the discussions about the means and methods of making images was a genuine pleasure for us also. Those three days were the highlight of our trip"
A group from City of London & Cripplegate Photographic Society (Day Experience in Inverpollaidh & Assynt) :
"We all really appreciated the effort you put into working with us and marvelled at how adept your were at getting us from one fantastic photogenic spot to another between the raindrops! I did have a bit of good fortune I wanted to share with you : one of my images of Achmelvich beach was short listed by Outdoor Photography magazine for their natural landscape competition. Needless to say I was pleased, but a lot of the credit goes to you for getting us to the right place at the right time." (GL)
"Even though our group was not a beginner’s one, your photographic tips were of great benefit to us and you managed to seamlessly round us up and move us from one location to another without getting too much rain on us or pelted with hailstones. You put us first to the extent that you didn’t bring your own camera but ready to lend us your filters. Most of all we enjoyed your company." (SL)
"I really appreciated your kind and patient guidance and marvelled at you understanding of the weather and terrain. I learned such a lot and also enjoyed becoming more confident with my new gear. I am so pleased with my pictures, but also with the memories I have of a very positive and enjoyable experience." (JJ)
"Just a note to say how much I enjoyed the day you spent with us. It was invaluable to have you guide us to the best photo opportunities and to help us understand the weather in your patch." (NR)
"Thank you for a fabulous day making landscape images in the Highlands - I have learned a vast amount and have a new approach to landscapes, which I previously avoided, and also some of my best results. Thank you for being a calmly inspirational tutor and obviously for ensuring we were at the best pie-shop in the land for a much needed lunch!" (JM)
IG (New Zealand) (Day Experiences in Inverpollaidh & Assynt) : "The two half days with you were very helpful, particularly in showing me photogenic spots, but also relating to the use of filters and settings to enhance the appearance of images. Thanks again for your assistance. It was money well spent!"
JT (Fife) (Day Experience in Assynt) : "It was great to have a tour of the area from a photographic perspective, helping me get a feel for the area and benefiting from your knowledge of it. Whilst the light was perhaps a little harsh it was perfect for touring around and my expectations were exceeded in terms of photographic opportunity.
Thanks again for an enjoyable and informative day."
Day Experience : contact me by email or phone and we'll sort out a date.
Holiday : Send me an email with your details, accommodation preference (Waterfront Cottage / other self-catering / B&B) and the number of days photography you require. I will reply with a costed package for your approval, and we'll take it from there.

Payment may be made by bank transfer (details will be supplied on request) or personal cheque (drawn on UK banks only). When a last minute booking is accepted, payment is required in cash before we start.

I aim to provide an enjoyable, safe and educational experience in the exceptionally beautiful landscape of the NW Highlands of Scotland. That landscape (“the last great wilderness of Europe”) has certain inherent and obvious risks. By making a booking you (and those who accompany you) assume full responsibility for your travel arrangements, photographic / computer equipment and personal safety. Travel and Personal Accident / Injury Insurance (as well photographic equipment insurance) is widely available and is recommended. I do not offer any separate insurance.
The weather in the North-West Highlands is notoriously changeable and often difficult to forecast, but my unrivalled knowledge of the locality should enable us to get out and enjoy some photography somewhere in most conditions. However, when this is impossible or unsafe, I will offer tuition in Photoshop (CSx / Elements) in lieu, or an alternative date if this is mutually acceptable.
